Susan Barfield

Susan Barfield has an A.S. in Secretarial Science as well as a B.S. in Art Education from Armstrong Atlantic State University. Susan attends church at Islands Christian, and her favorite verse is Jeremiah 29:11, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Susan most enjoys showing her students that our lives are empty canvases like the ones in her classroom. No matter students’ artistic styles in the classroom and in their relationships with the Creator, she wants them to finish with a masterpiece that hangs on the wall and in their hearts.

Bryce Bielec

Bryce Bielec received a B.M.E. from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. He attends Coastal Bible Fellowship in Rincon, where he co-leads the youth group. Bryce lives by Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to Him and He will make your paths straight.” He is excited to be part of the Calvary family and to share his passion for the Lord and for music. Bryce enjoys playing in the snow, throwing the frisbee, and playing the trombone.

Laura Bielec

Laura Bielec received her B.A. in Spanish language, M.A. in Spanish language, and M.A.T. from Georgia Southern University. She also studied at the University of Valencia in Spain during her undergraduate years. Laura attends Coastal Bible Fellowship in Rincon. One of her favorite verses to live by is John 15:5, “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” Laura loves to share Spanish language and culture with young students who will use their language skills in many diverse ways in the future. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with family and friends, trying new restaurants, and traveling. She is married to Bryce Bielec, the band teacher at Calvary.

Josh Brewer

Josh Brewer has his B.S. in Psychology from Mississippi College, his M.Div. degree in missions and world Christianity from George W. Truett Seminary, and is a Certified Journalism Educator. He attends First Baptist Church of Savannah. Josh’s fuel for life is Zephaniah 3:17, “The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save, He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” He is married to fellow Calvary teacher, Nicki Brewer. They have two daughters, Caedmon, and Story. Brewer enjoys music, movies, books, and traveling the world in search of new cultural experiences.

Nicki Brewer

Nicki Brewer holds a B.B.A. degree in marketing from Georgia Southern University and an M.Ed. in secondary English education from Armstrong Atlantic State University. Nicki attends First Baptist Church of Savannah, and her favorite verses are Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” She enjoys writing, reading, drawing, coaching, spending time with her family, and hanging out in coffee shops with friends.

John Carr

John Carr graduated from Calvary Day School in 2010 and received his B.A. in History from Brewton-Parker College in 2014. He attends Calvary Baptist Temple, where his wife, Laura, serves as the Director of Preschool Ministries. John is motivated daily by Luke 9:23, “And he said to all, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.’” In addition to teaching science, John serves as a coach in the Baseball and Softball programs at Calvary.

Mike Carswell

Mike Carswell received his B.S. in Business Administration from Bucknell University, his M.S. in History from Fairfield University, and his M.S. in Education from St. Lawrence University. Carswell attends Our Lady Queen of Peace at Hunter Army Airfield. His favorite verses are Isaiah 40:28-31, “Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Mike’s passions in life are his wife, his children, his friends, teaching, and coaching.

Liliam Crowley

Liliam Crowley graduated from La Normal Superior, a high school designed to train teachers in Colombia, and has been in front of a classroom since she was 13 years old. She holds a B.A. in Early Childhood Education from Universidad de Cordoba Colombia. She worked for five years at La Salle School teaching English to elementary school students, leading a high school vocational group, and helping organize evangelical missions in poor communities in Colombia.
Liliam received her M.A in Spanish Language and Masters of Arts in Teaching from Georgia Southern in 2011. Her favorite verse is Isaiah 40:29: “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” She believes her entire life is a testimony of God’s love and power and loves sharing His message with others. In her spare time Liliam loves traveling and spending time with her beautiful family. She is passionate about teaching and sharing the Latin culture with her students and loves learning about other cultures and languages.

Kevin Daiss

Kevin Daiss holds a B.A. in English from Armstrong Atlantic State University. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in American media and pop culture from Arizona State University. His favorite verse is 2 Corinthians 2:11, “For what human being knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no one comprehends what is truly God’s except the Spirit of God.” Kevin attends the Vineyard Church of Savannah. He enjoys spending time with his son, Fitzgerald, and his dog, Bowie. He likes playing guitar and reading books that discuss the aesthetics and philosophy of popular culture.

Eli Dillard

Eli Dillard holds a B.A.J. degree in Journalism with a Spanish minor from the University of Georgia and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Baltimore. She attends Savannah Christian Church and is encouraged by the verse 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God did not give us a soul of timidity, but of love, power and discipline.” Eli also coaches softball and considers the field her second classroom. She enjoys traveling, coffee, reading, finding new ways to write creatively and spending time with her pets.

Bryan Evans

Bryan Evans has a B.A. in history from the University of Georgia. He attends Trinity United Methodist Church and abides by John 14:6, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Evans has always loved learning about the past and hopes to share his passion for history with his students. Currently he teaches ancient and modern world history as well as AP European History and is the “Voice of the Cavs” on the Calvary Sports Network. Evans and his wife, Alicia, were blessed to welcome their first child, Stephen, into the world on August 1, 2013. He loves the opportunity that Calvary Day School offers him to be a positive influence for young adults.

Sherry Griffin

Sherry Griffin received her B.S. degree in physical education for grades K-12 from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Griffin attends First Presbyterian Church and thrives on Psalm 25:4-5, “Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths, guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are my God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.” In addition to spending time with her husband and two children, Griffin enjoys working with girls who are as passionate about softball as she is.

Steve Harris

Steve Harris received his B.S. in mathematics education from N.C. State and followed that up with an M.Ed. in mathematics from Georgia State. Harris has over 20 years of experience in the classroom, having taught in Georgia, Taiwan, South Carolina, and New Hampshire. He holds gifted certification and National Board certification (AYA Mathematics). Additionally, he loves discipleship and writing. He is an assistant coach for the football team and is the head wrestling coach. He attends Community Bible Church. Harris and his wife, Alisa, have seven children who attend Calvary Day School (Elijah, Moriah, Mattie, Hannah, Sarah, Zeke, and Eden) and three children who are in college (Caleb, Nathan, and Zach). His passion in every aspect of his life is to see those under his care figure out the purpose for which they were created and for which the Master has called them according to Philippians 3:10-12.

Rich Hatch

Rich Hatch received his B.A. in theatre from Messiah College in Grantham, PA, after growing up in southeast Massachusetts. He served as an Associate Pastor in north-central Pennsylvania for several years, during which time he received his Master of Ministry degree from Baptist Bible Seminary in Clarks Summit, PA. Hatch is also working with the pastoral staff at Calvary Baptist Temple to contribute to the drama ministries of the church. His favorite verses are I Corinthians 15:34, “Awake to righteousness and sin no more; for some have not the knowledge of God. I say this to your shame” and Hebrews 13:20-21, “Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.” His favorite verse is also — you get the idea. Hatch loves the coast, but he will always miss the wilderness of PA. He’s thrilled to be meeting and laboring with his southern brothers and sisters in Christ!

Marcia Herndon

Marcia Herndon earned a Bachelors of Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master’s of Science in Engineering from California State University at Long Beach. She brings practical experience to the classroom, having worked as an engineer in the Aerospace industry’s defense sector for 17 years. She and her husband, Tim, are active members at First Baptist Church of the Islands where she has worked with students since 2009. Her life verse is Colossians 3:23: “In everything you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord and not for men.” Mrs. Herndon has one son, a Calvary graduate and college student. She is passionate about sharing her love of Christ and of science with Calvary students. She enjoys reading, playing tennis, and watching football.

Gordon Hunter

Gordon Hunter

Gordon Hunter received his B.S. in Public Relations from Georgia Southern University in 2008. He is currently pursuing his Masters in Sports Management. Gordon is a member of Garden City United Methodist Church and a Savannah native. He believes that all Christians are called to give: give of your talents, time and resources. Deuteronomy 16:17 “Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God which he has given to you.” Gordon is married to Calvary High School Physical Education teacher and Varsity Volleyball coach Hannah Hunter. They have one son, Nelson, who was born in July 2015. In his spare time he enjoys the outdoors, golf, and spending time with family.

Hannah Hunter

Hannah Hunter received both her B.S. and M.S. degrees in health and physical education from Georgia Southern University. Her favorite verse is Colossians 3:23, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” She feels blessed to be a part of the Calvary Day School family and to use the gifts God has given her to teach and coach. Along with playing volleyball, she enjoys being active, eating good food, and spending time with friends and family.

John Locke

John Locke received his B.A. in history with a minor in communication from Florida State University. Locke attends Saint John’s Episcopal Church. His favorite verse is John 11:35, “Jesus wept,” because it shows the true humanity of Christ and the power of simple language. Locke enjoys his roles in life as a father, teacher, mentor, and friend.

Cory Martin

Cory Martin has his B.S. in biology from the University of Georgia and his M.A. in science & math education from Armstrong Atlantic State University. Martin attends Community Bible Church and gains inspiration from Ephesians 3:20-21, “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” For Cory, the best aspect of his position as the Dean of Curriculum & Instruction is the opportunity to build relationships with students all the while helping each student reach their academic goals.  He is thankful for his wife Katie and their new daughter Carter Anne. He loves time spent with his family, sports of any kind, and the Georgia Bulldogs.

Harry McGee

Harry McGee received his B.A. in psychology from Vanderbilt University. He earned his M.A. in religion, his M.Div. degree, and his D.Min. degree in pastoral counseling from Westminster Seminary. McGee attends Community Bible Church. He is inspired by Philippians 4:6-7, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And this peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” McGee most enjoys the opportunity that teaching offers to witness students realizing their potential and achieving excellence both in the classroom and in their walk with God.

Lauren Moore

Lauren Moore received her B.S. in biological sciences from Biola University and her M.A.T. from Point Loma Nazarene University in Southern California. She attends Community Bible Church. Her favorite Bible verse is Hebrews 12:1-3, “Therefore, since we have been surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinful men so that you may not grow weary and lose heart.”

Sammie Murphy

Sammie Murphy holds a B.A. in education and religious studies from Sacred Heart University and an M.A. in applied linguistics from the University of South Florida. Teaching for over 25 years, Murphy enjoys being able to teach teenagers (that fleeting stage between kiddom and adulthood), and in 2013 she started Calvary’s equestrian team, the first Middle/High School equestrian team in Savannah. She says that the most challenging and the most rewarding part of her job is maintaining a positive reflection of Christ for her students as they approach adulthood. She attends The Sanctuary, and her favorite verses are 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18, “For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore, comfort one another with these words.”

Ava Nelson

Ava Nelson has a B.S. in mathematics with minors in computer science and education in addition to an M.Ed. in math education from Armstrong Atlantic State University. Nelson attends Trinity United Methodist Church of Pooler. Her favorite verse is 1 Timothy 4:12, “Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity show yourself an example of those who believe.” Nelson loves spending time with her husband and two daughters. Her passion for music, mathematics, and teaching is equal to her passion for the antics of teenagers.

Angela Norris

Angela Norris received her B.S. in physical science for chemistry from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and her M.S. in secondary education from Grand Canyon University. She attends Savannah Christian Church. Her favorite verses are Psalm 27:4-5, “One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek, inquire for, and [insistently] require: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord [in His presence] all the days of my life, to behold and gaze upon the beauty [the sweet attractiveness and the delightful loveliness] of the Lord and to meditate, consider, and inquire in His temple. For in the day of trouble He will hide me in His shelter; in the secret place of His tent will He hide me; He will set me high upon a rock.” In addition to spending time in God’s Word, Norris loves spending time with her husband and children. She loves teaching chemistry as much as she loves learning it.

Alex Reid

Alex Reid is a 2011 graduate of Calvary Day School and earned B.S. in Mathematics from Georgia College and State University. At Georgia College, Reid was a member of the men’s basketball team all four years. Alex was married to Mckenzie Reid on December 29, 2013, in Savannah. He enjoys spending time with his wife and their dog Mello, playing golf, and being in fellowship with members of their church. Reid’s favorite verse is 2 Corinthians 5:21, “For our sake He made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” This verse resonates with me because it summarizes the great exchange Jesus makes for us on our behalf.

Preston Smith

Preston Smith earned a B.S. in Sports Administration from the University of Louisville. Despite being a great high school quarterback, he became a three-year starter outside linebacker for the University of Louisville. Preston and his wife Wendy have five children and attend Calvary Baptist Temple. His favorite scripture is Psalm 23:1-3: “The Lord is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” His favorite thing about being a part of the Calvary family is that everything is focused on the Lord, because we are nothing without Him in our lives.

Rick Tomberlin

Rick Tomberlin received his B.S. in Health and Physical Education from Florida State University. He has been a coach in Georgia for over thirty-two years where his teams have made it to five state championships, winning three. He and his wife Angela have a daughter, Tiffany, and three grandchildren. He lives his life by Joshua 1:9, “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” He likes to spend his free time speaking for groups, coaching clinics, competing in bench press competitions, bike riding and hiking.
